Common uses include shortcuts for design and editing software, media controls, or macros that trigger multi-step actions with a single press.

Most enthusiast macropads run on the same open firmware used by full custom keyboards, which means each key can usually be remapped to any function, including multi-key combinations, through a simple configuration app rather than requiring code. Some include a small screen or rotary encoder for extra controls like volume or scrolling.

When choosing a macropad, check how many keys and encoders it has against how many shortcuts you actually use regularly, since a device with more keys than you need just adds desk clutter. Confirming it supports remapping software before buying avoids ending up with fixed, non-editable shortcuts.
