One of the most common mistakes new hobbyists make is buying a keycap set that does not fully fit their board, leaving gaps where keys are missing or caps that will not attach. Keycap compatibility comes down to three things: the stem that connects cap to switch, the physical layout of your board, and whether the set includes the specific key sizes your board uses. Checking all three before buying saves disappointment.
Start with the stem, the small connector on the underside of each keycap. The vast majority of mechanical switches use a cross shaped stem, and most keycaps are made to match it, so on typical boards this is rarely a problem. Still, it is worth a quick confirmation that your switches and keycaps use the same stem style, especially if you use less common switches.
Layout is the next check. Confirm whether your board is ANSI or ISO, since that changes the shape of enter and shift, and note your board's size and any nonstandard key widths. Small keyboards and unusual bottom rows frequently use narrower modifier keys than a standard set provides, and a set that assumes a common bottom row may not cover an unusual one.
This is why the concept of kits matters. Keycap sets are often sold with a base kit plus extra kits that add the extra keys needed for different layouts and sizes. Before ordering, match your board's specific keys against what the base kit includes and buy any extension kit required to cover your layout, particularly for smaller or ISO boards.
The safe process is to list every key on your board and its width, then compare that list against the set's included keys and its layout support notes. Pay special attention to the bottom row, the modifiers, and enter and shift. A few minutes of checking against the product's compatibility information ensures the set arrives complete and every key on your board has a matching cap.
