How to Clean a Mechanical Keyboard the Right Way

Mechanical keyboards collect dust, crumbs, skin oils, and general grime, and because the keycaps sit above open switches, debris finds its way down into the board over time. Regular cleaning keeps the board looking fresh, prevents sticky or scratchy keys, and extends how long everything feels good to use. A sensible routine ranges from a quick surface tidy to a full keycap wash.
For routine upkeep, unplug the board or power it off, turn it upside down, and give it a gentle shake to dislodge loose debris. A blast of compressed air or a small brush clears dust from between the keys, and a lightly dampened cloth wipes oils off the keycap tops and the case. Doing this every week or two prevents most buildup from ever becoming a problem.
For a deeper clean, remove the keycaps with a keycap puller so you can reach the exposed board. Pull straight up and set the caps aside, ideally photographing your layout first so you know exactly where each cap returns. With the caps off, brush and air out the switch area thoroughly, since this is where the worst grime hides.
Keycaps themselves can be washed. Soak them in warm water with a little mild soap, agitate gently, then rinse and, most importantly, let them dry completely before reinstalling. Trapped moisture is the main risk, so give them plenty of drying time on a towel. Never put the keycaps back while they are still damp.
Keep water away from the electronics. The circuit board, switches, and any wireless components should never be submerged or soaked, and a barely damp cloth is all they need on the surface. If you spill liquid into a board, unplug it immediately and let it dry fully before powering on. With a light routine and the occasional deep clean, a mechanical keyboard stays pleasant to use for a very long time.
