Linear switch

A mechanical keyboard switch with a smooth, uninterrupted downstroke and no tactile bump or audible click.

A linear switch moves in a straight line from the top of its travel to full actuation without any change in resistance along the way. There is no bump to signal the actuation point and no click mechanism inside, so the only feedback is the bottom-out at the end of the stroke. This makes linear switches feel fast and consistent under the finger, which is one reason they are common in gaming keyboards where quick, repeated presses matter more than feel confirmation.

Linear switches are usually described by two numbers: the operating force needed to actuate and the bottom-out force needed to press the stem all the way down. Lighter linears feel easier to hold down and can lead to accidental repeats for heavy typists, while heavier linears resist unintended presses but tire the finger faster over long sessions. Spring weight, not the housing material, is what mostly determines this feel.

When choosing a linear switch, look at the actuation and bottom-out force together rather than either number alone, and check whether the switch is factory-lubed or needs lubing for smooth travel. A common mistake is picking a switch based on a marketing name without checking the force chart, since two switches with similar branding can feel very different in the hand.
